Problem Complex Care Routines

Managing respiratory conditions requires patients to consistently track medications, monitor symptoms, and maintain treatment plans over extended periods of time. Existing healthcare experiences often feel clinical, fragmented, and difficult to integrate into everyday life, resulting in missed doses and inconsistent health management.

Solution A Guided Care Experience

I designed a companion platform that transforms complex healthcare routines into clear, manageable daily interactions. Through medication tracking, symptom monitoring, caregiver tools, and engagement systems, the experience helps patients stay informed and consistent throughout their treatment journey.

Result Improved Patient Engagement

The platform established a scalable foundation for long-term patient support by making respiratory care more approachable, accessible, and engaging. Through intuitive workflows and a cohesive design system, Purcell balances medical clarity with everyday usability.

“Jennifer brought a strong balance of visual design and user centered thinking to the Purcell project. Her ability to create polished, intuitive interfaces consistently improved the overall user experience, while her collaborative approach made her a valuable part of the team.

CONTEXT

Purcell is a digital health platform focused on helping patients manage respiratory conditions more effectively.

And how does it do that?

Instead of expecting patients to manually track medications and symptoms across multiple tools, Purcell centralizes daily care activities into a single experience designed around consistency, accessibility, and long-term engagement.

By combining medication management, symptom tracking, caregiver support, and personalized health insights, the platform helps transform healthcare routines into sustainable habits.

PROBLEM

Living with a chronic respiratory condition requires constant attention.

Patients must balance medication schedules, symptom tracking, and treatment plans while managing the demands of everyday life. As routines become more complex, consistency becomes harder to maintain and healthcare often fades into the background.

People didn't need more health data.

They needed support turning treatment into a habit.

GOALS + NORTH STAR

To design a digital health platform that simplifies respiratory care management for patients and caregivers.

Simplify Care: Transform medication and symptom tracking into clear, manageable daily workflows.

Improve Adherence: Encourage consistent treatment habits through reminders, progress tracking, and engagement systems.

Support Caregivers: Provide visibility into patient health data and treatment progress through dedicated caregiver tools.

Scale Growth: Establish a foundational design system to efficiently support future healthcare features and patient experiences.

PROCESS + KEY INSIGHTS

I conducted competitive analysis, workflow mapping, and user experience evaluations to better understand the challenges patients face when managing long-term respiratory conditions.

Key Insight 1: Fragmented Health Tracking

Patients often rely on multiple tools, notes, and memory to manage medications and symptoms, creating inconsistencies in daily care routines.

Key Insight 2: Adherence Decline

Treatment plans are often easy to start but difficult to maintain over time. Without reinforcement and progress visibility, patients gradually become less consistent with medication usage.

Key Insight 3: Clinical Complexity

Many healthcare applications prioritize medical information over usability, creating experiences that feel intimidating rather than supportive for everyday users.

Key Insight 4: Caregiver Visibility Gap

Caregivers often lack visibility into treatment adherence and symptom progression, making it difficult to provide timely support when needed.

SOLUTION

Purcell, a patient-centered healthcare platform designed around consistency, accessibility, and long-term engagement.

By combining medication tracking, symptom monitoring, caregiver tools, and personalized health insights, the platform helps patients build healthier habits while making respiratory care easier to manage.

DESIGN 1/3

The guided onboarding experience

reducing healthcare complexity

This feature introduces patients to the platform through a simplified onboarding journey that gradually collects health information, treatment details, and personal goals. By breaking complex healthcare setup into manageable steps, it directly supports the insight that medical applications often feel overwhelming to new users. The result is a more approachable introduction to long-term care management.

DESIGN 2/3

Medication & Symptom Tracking

building consistency through visibility

This feature provides patients with a structured way to monitor medication usage, symptoms, and daily health progress within a single experience. By centralizing critical health information, it directly supports the insight that fragmented tracking systems create inconsistencies in care. The result is greater awareness and improved treatment adherence over time.

DESIGN 3/3

Progress & Reward Systems

encouraging long-term engagement

This feature introduces progress indicators, milestones, and reward-based interactions that reinforce positive healthcare behaviors. By making progress visible and motivating continued participation, it directly supports the insight that adherence naturally declines without ongoing reinforcement. The result is a more engaging experience that encourages healthier habits.

WHAT I WOULD DO NEXT…

Introduce inhaler training and exercises for asthma control

Respiratory health is one of the fastest growing areas where digital tools are being used extensively to improve patient outcomes. Leveraging it, I'd focus on introducing inhaler training and guided breathing exercises primarily focused on helping patients build healthier habits and improve asthma control.
